I'm a Believer

A few months ago we had a workshop at church about how to save money. One woman taught us her tricks for grocery shopping and a major component of it was using coupons. I've never been a big believer in coupons up to this point because we don't use lots of the name brand products or eat much of the processed food that offer coupons. But then she told us that she spends a jaw-dropping $80/month on groceries for a family of four. I am still a bit skeptical about her $80 figure - does the woman not buy milk or eat any type of fresh fruit or vegetable? Milk alone costs $8 every week or so. But even if I never get to be quite as thrifty as our speaker, I thought there had to be something I could learn.
I tried to find a few coupons online, but didn't have much luck and was begining to think it was a all waste of time. Then a friend who has cut her grocery bill by at least a third as a result of scouring the sales and compounding the savings with her coupons gave me some website links and good tips. B, thank you for showing me the ways of the Jedi Master.
I spent an hour or so online this week, and found some great deals and here are the result of this week's shopping:
Meijer-
Spent: $37.13
Saved: $ 42.19
Kroger -
Spent: $4.19
Saved: $17.80
I think I might be hooked. Are you a coupon user, why or why not? Any good tips to share?

Nollie! I want to cry every time the checker says, "Do you have any coupons?" and I say no but I know I should. I have felt the exact same way as you about coupons...it seems it would take too long and I could just buy a cheaper brand. But I am so willing to learn! Would you mind expounding on your "new" findings? Where you looked online and stuff...

I've always wanted to get into couponing but haven't because it seems a little overwhelming. I have a co-worker who wants to be my mentor though.

I believe that you probably should share the links and tips. We are just a small family of two and sadly need the help.

Nollie, I have recently started using coupons, and have even started getting the Sunday paper for the coupon circulars. But I still need a few more tips! I'll have to talk to you and Brittany about it.

Nollie, your cousin Joanna is a coupon queen. I only have the link to her personal blog but for a while she had a coupon blog as well. The link is utah-hawkinsfamily.blogspot.com. Maybe she has some links as well.

Yes, please share the tips. Do you clip coupons or what?

Shut up! Are you kidding me? You saved that much money???? We seriously need to talk. Is this something that would take like an hour every week- could I do it in like 5 minute chunks everyday? I would LOVE to shave $40 off our grocery bill every week! I will need to call/email you. I'm seriously so interested. I want to be a Jedi, too.

Don't move to Thailand. Grocery coupons are virtually nonexistent here. There are just fast food coupons that people hand you as you step on and off elevators in malls.

Plus it's not worth the expense in time and lost sanity to drive to multiple grocery stores in this city. Extra hours in traffic to save a few bucks? No thanks.

It's a tradeoff. We were all over the coupons in NH, and had the savings cards at all the grocery stores.

Elevator... make that escalator. My bad.
