Brothers and Sisters

Happy birthday to my darling younger brother Rikker and sister Kaylee, whose birthdays fall in quick succession on February 13th and 14th. We love you and miss you!!

Rikker
Here are some snippets from the fun photo montages my mom put together for their birthdays. I fear for the frightening pictures she's promised to post of me when my birthday rolls around in August. Ben reminds me of Rikker at this age because they have the exact same hair and eye color.

Some of my fun memories with Rikker are sharing a room when I was 9-11 years old, driving to high school together and listening to the "Beatles for Breakfast" radio segment each day (he got our whole family into the Beatles), laughing at the crazy antics of him and his friends when they were teenagers, and recovering from the postraumatic stress of him mooning me once as I pulled out of our driveway. Rikker served a mission for our church in Thailand and we traveled to Bangkok to pick him up, which was a fabulous adventure. He lives in Bangkok with his family now, and is a Fulbright Scholar, Thai linguistic genius, and the author of a blog on Thai language, media, and culture.

We didn't know how lucky we were in Boston when Rikker and Kara lived only two hours away in New Hampshire while he finished his undergraduate degree. Oh, to have more weekends full of yummy food (Puddin' head cake and Kara's amazing Thai cooking) strolls around campus, forays to the Asian grocery store in Brookline for fish sauce and jasmine rice, drives through New England to enjoy the fall colors, free movies at The Nugget (Rikker's former employer), game nights, and great conversation.

Kaylee
Kaylee is the youngest in our family and she and I are 10 1/2 years apart. After she was born, I begged my mom to bring her in to my 5th grade class for show and tell, which my mom kindly obliged, probably against her better judgment since it was the middle of winter and a classroom full of germy kids. Despite our age difference, Kaylee and I have forged a bond as we shared a room for six weeks during the summer after my freshman year of college, and as she's come to visit us for spring breaks and summer vacations throughout the years.

Kaylee turned 20 and is a sophomore at BYU. I'm trying not to be jealous, but she'll be spending April-June studying abroad in London during the festivities surrounding the royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton. But I digress...She is a great pianist, a fashion/accessories maven, a smarty pants who is very dedicated to her schoolwork, and a doting auntie/huge help whenever she comes to visit. She also has a wicked sense of humor and is one of the few people who will play endless rounds of Skip-Bo and watch Glee with me on Hulu. Did I mention her gorgeous brown almond-shaped eyes? In short, Kaylee is a person who's always a joy to be around and a pleasure to have as a sister and friend. Andy has always said that out of the Dockum sisters if he hadn't married me, he would have married Kaylee. Thank goodness for that 10 1/2 year gap.
