North and South

If you're a fan of Pride and Prejudice, especially the BBC version, you'll like this movie. A friend lent it to me this week and I stayed up watching until 1 a.m. last night to find out how it ends. My initial impression from the title was that it was set in Civil War times, but it's really about two people during the Industrial Revolution from Northern and Southern England. Margaret is a well-bred clergyman's daughter from genteel southern England who moves up to a dirty, coarse mill town in Northern England where she is initially dismissive of the people and their ways. A mill owner, the brooding Mr. Thornton, falls in love with her, despite her disdain for him, and from there we go on a journey of starcrossed lovers.

Not only are the charachters and storyline engrossing, but I loved the historical setting of the strife between millworkers and masters. In some ways, it's even better than P&P (heresy, I know). The relationship between Thornton and his mother is touching and Mrs. Thornton isn't so one-dimensional as Mrs. Bennett or Lady Catherine DeBourgh. She is proud, but able to admit when she is wrong.

So if you're in the market for something new, check it out at your local library. There's a whole world of BBC period dramas out there waiting for me.

Ooh, I've been pretty anxious to watch it. I'll have to get it while Phil's "Mr. I'm so busy because I work full time and do night school man." Oh Nollie, did you hear? We're STAYING!

Next thing you need to do is read the book. I thought it was fabulous (author is elizabeth gaskel), possibly better than the movie. Mr. Thornton isn't portrayed as such a harsh person in the book, and there's always the opportunity for more character development in the novel. Anyhoo, I actually just purchased it because I liked it so much and I'm anxiously awaiting it's arrival from amazon...

PS -- have you checked out the BBC Jane Eyre yet? Oh, my goodness, it's fabulous as well. And I agree about the possibility of ousting P&P as #1 -- definately gives it a run for it's money.

I absolutely LOVED this one. I was also misled by the title. Not civil war for sure. You do need to see Jane Eyre - fantastic.

I KNOW! Wasn't it amazing! I think I loved it even more because it surpassed expectations (because how could anything be as good as P&P?). I've been craving this movie lately.

I just got this in the mail today! You should also try A&E's Jane Eyre...it was wonderful! I'm glad that I'm not alone in that sentiment.

I'm so glad that you enjoyed it!!! Now you know why I said I can watch it over and over again. By the way, I'm more than happy to spill the beans on the Twilight Saga if you don't already know!

I've heard about this before, and now I am even more determined to see it. I can always count on a good recommendation from Nollie.
