Midnight Madness

Spill it. Were you at the midnight book release party breathlessly awaiting your copy of Breaking Dawn to discover Bella's fate? Have you already devoured your copy and are rejoicing or bemoaning the outcome? Are you currently ignoring everything else in your life until you finish the book? Or, cruel, cruel world, are you one of the millions on a library waiting list (like a friend of mine who is something like 627th in line) for your chance to get a crack at it, while you subliminally urge everyone ahead of you to read faster, dangit!

As someone who proudly stood in line at midnight for the last four Harry Potter books, I admire an ardent literary fan. But I have to take exception when people compare the Twilight series to my beloved Harry Potter. Granted, they are both publishing phenomenons, have sold unbelievably well and spawned legions of obsessed fans. But really? Epic saga of good against evil vs. a teenage vampire romance. Hmm... Yes, I know I'm going to incite some rage for that comment, but I do love to stir the pot. :)

So here's some poetic justice for all of you who secretly (or not so secretly) pine for Edward. I am curious to find out what happens to Bella and Edward. Does she become a vampire so they can be together forever? Does she choose Jacob instead? Yes, I am asking someone to be a spoiler and save me from having to read it myself. If you don't want to know, read the comments at your own risk. For those of you who don't want to be a spoiler, let me know where you fall on the Twilight spectrum and what you thought of the final installment.

Great post, I agree. I am the type who will wait in line for Harry Potter (or at least dress up for the festivities in attempts to win a free copy) but I didn't wait in line for Breaking Dawn. I do have the excuse that I was out of the country, but even so, I wouldn't have waited. I will however read it, once some other ardent lover is done and ready to let me borrow their copy. :) I do have to say though, seeing people lining up for book releases is kind of nice--at least our society hasn't gone completely to visual media in that they can't support literature anymore.

I was shocked when you posted about disliking the Twilight series because everyone else was DYING over it. That made me want to read it! So, I found someone who owned them all and started into it. While I enjoy the story line and plan to read the final installment, I would never compare it to Harry Potter! I was/am almost embarrassed to admit I've read it! With Harry Potter, I would have read it anywhere and love talking about it because it somehow seems a little less shallow. Probably due to being more good vs. evil, instead of just a teenage romance, as you pointed out. But, honestly, it is unique, and I feel like she's a good writer, and she obviously knows how to create the perfect man for MILLIONS of women out there who are waiting for their "Edward" to come along! Luckily, some of us have already found ours, so we can just enjoy the storyline and not let it influence our search for eternal happiness.

I gave a book review on my blog. Bella has vampire spawn and names her the lamest thing ever. I also learned that vampire sex is rockin'...which makes me a little uncomfortable.

Okay, okay, I will admit that I was in line at midnight but not because I couldn't stand to wait any longer to read it. I just moved and in trying to become friends with nice girls in my ward, I said that I would go along with them. I finished it yesterday and I did like it. I can appreciate the fact that Stephenie Meyer is not the greatest writer ever but I do enjoy the story. While reading it, Kelly and I had a debate about whether or not he could write something as good or better. I said no way. Last night, while finishing up the book, he smirked at me and went in to use the computer. Fifteen minutes later, he comes out laughing asking if I'd like to read our blog. Check it out Nollie (www.kellyandkimberly.blogspot.com). Do you think he has potential?

I haven't read any of the books and don't plan to. I love Harry Potter too! You always have interesting things to think about. I love your blog!

I agree with Trine, though I don't know her--spot on, haha! No comparison to Potter...plus the end of this one (and supposedly the series) was pretty anticlimactic. Though I want to really like them, I'll have to say Shannon Hale is a better writer as far as Mormon YA fantasy goes. But somehow not as engrossing...(see trine's post again)

I am a closet and very embarrassed Twilight fan. I can see the justification of all the criticism and agree with most of it, but I did like the story. I've read Breaking Dawn. Bella becomes a vampire after giving birth (and almost dying) to a mutant human/vampire. She names her Renesmee, seriously could you think up a worse name? The end is super anticlimactic. I'd say first book was the best, 2nd OK, 3rd better and the final over all pretty darn lame and I thought it was a waste of my time. It's bad when you can't wait for a book to be over. But none the less the whole series is fun to talk about, especially if you can enjoy and laugh at it at the same time.
