Sick and Wrong

My mother-in-law sent me a gift in the mail today: A copy of her ward's new cookbook. As I skimmed the pages I was very disturbed to see the large number of concoctions involving Jell-O and other various and assorted foodstuffs that all made me want to gag. Why, why, why does the Mormon world have a sick obsession with making disgusting Jell-O "salads"? I use the term very loosely.

Call me a food snob. I prefer to think of myself as a purist. In my opinion, the ONLY thing that should be added to Jell-O (itself not the most nautural of food items) is fruit. And the fewer types in one Jell-O, the better. That's it. No marshmallows, whip cream, carrots (gag!), raisins, or pretzels. And heaven forbid mayonnaise, butter, cream cheese, tapioca, 7-Up, or nuts. What are people thinking??? If, in defending this principle, I am never invited to another barbeque or potluck ever again, so be it.
Lime Jell-O with pineapple. My favorite.

I whole heartedly agree. I have never even heard of putting mayo or pretzels in. That is sick and wrong. My favorite way to eat jello is with pomegranate seeds. :)

Amen. I think Rick still takes it hard that I never make jello "salad." You can come to a BBQ at our place.

Maybe it's the fact that we didn't grow up in Utah, where Jell-O is the state treat.

Please, PLEASE tell me you did NOT find a jello recipe using mayonaise. In what step of the recipe could you POSSIBLY add it? You know what, I don't want to know. I'll be happy living in ignorance forever on this topic.

Food snobs, UNITE!

I'm going to have to disagree with you on this one . . . my ALL-TIME favorite jello recipe is called Pretzel Jello Salad, and not only does it have pretzels in it, but also cream cheese AND butter! It's so yummy - definitely a family favorite. When Dan sees me making it, he asks what the special occasion is!

I would love for you to live close so that I could invite you to a bbq and let you try this one jello recipe complete with whip cream and pudding. Cookies too sometimes. :) Yum!
