1. Picking your own strawberries. I have a newfound appreciation for the plight of migrant workers as well as five delicious batches of homemade freezer jam waiting to be devoured (mainly by me).

It was 90+ degrees with major humidity. Note to self: Pack away the denim until September.

2. A good old-fashioned weenie roast. Thanks to our friends who had us over to celebrate the season with their new fire pit. They have the best backyard ever: Deck, trampoline, aforementioned fire pit, swingset, sandbox, and amazing garden. In short, my dream yard.

The kids loved to make s'mores on the open fire. Ben, not to be outdone by the other kids, jammed four marshmallows onto his stick.

3. Warm summer evenings spent with good friends and good conversation.

4. Long afternoons at the YMCA - we love the pool!

5. Yummy treats shared during pool rest periods. Note: This a strange curiosity that I've seen only in Ohio. During the last 15 minutes of every hour, the lifeguards blow the whistle and everyone has to clear out of the pool until the hour. Why is this? Are the lifeguards just sick of being vigilant for long stretches? Do they want to toy with anxious, sweaty kids and tired parents? Anyone who knows, please enlighten me.

6. Trying out a fancy new set of wheels at the bike shop with your dad and a sucker in your mouth. No, we were not getting Ben a new bike, we were just trying to entertain him while Andy had to get a new pump for his bike.

9. The picture speaks for itself.

I'm glad that was a distracter bike. Boys and pink bikes with streamers is soooo last year.
The reason they clear out the pool is to do a clean check. They monitor chemicals, look for other yucky stuff kids might leave around. They do that in my SIL's community pool. They should do that here considering the lovely bug that went around last summer.
I feel your pain with the heat and the humidity. You never quite get used to it!
Hey Nollie. Tim's wife here... we came across your blog and wanted to say hi! Hope you are enjoying Columbus; we sure miss it! Charlotte is so hot! You can check out our web page web.mac.com/melissajlarson
As for the whistling at the pool; here they have adult swim the last 10 minutes of the hour so not sure if that is the same or not.
Anyway, hope you guys are enjoying your summer.
It all looks so fun. We miss you guys - hopefully we'll run into you soon!

Hi, Nollie! We really hate pool-check time every hour at the pool, but ours never lasts a full 15 minutes unless they find something NASTY in there. Usually it's just out and back in within 5 minutes!
Nollie, correct me if I'm wrong but, isn't there a law in Ohio against children picking in the fields when they are three? I know the economy isn't great right now but let the poor kid have his childhood!
yes, here in charlotte, they do "adult swim" at the Y for the last 10-15 minutes of every hour. the girls are annoyed by it, but at least they are old enough to listen when i tell them to get out!
Oh, my heart ached through that post. I've got to go find fun things to do around here. I miss you all so much!
Yeah, I did hear once that one of the main things they're doing when they clear out the pool is check for poop. Lovely.
