I know I'm swimming against the current here, but can someone PLEASE explain to me why these books are NYT Bestsellers? Insipid dialogue, a clunky plot, and poorly developed/ unlikeable characters are just the beginning. She takes 500+ pages per book to cover what could have taken 100. Most of it is spent with Bella oogling over Edward (my recent favorite line: "His eyes were like liquid onyx...") - Gag! After hearing glowing reviews, I read Twilight, and found it stragely compelling, but definitely so-so. I went on to New Moon, hoping the author could redeem herself, but to no avail. I wasted 10+ hours of my life on these books and refuse to read the third. I'm sure someone can give me the plot in a minute or less. If you are a Stephanie Meyers devotee, please let me know what you like about these books so I can find some heretofore overlooked redeemable qualities. My biggest regret is that I gave my 16-year-old sister a copy of Twilight before I read it. Kaylee, my apologies and feel free to sell it on eBay or give it away at a white elephant gift exchange.

Haha - I am in LOVE with the books! I read the whole series in like 3 days. It was so refreshing for me to finally read something that didn't have any sleaze! I love to read and I tell ya - it's been a long time since I read something that didn't have swearing, violence, and sex all through it. I admit they are gushy, I think you have to have a serious amount of estrogen in order to appreciate them (I qualify under that description :).
How are you guys doing?
The third books is basically Bella trying to throw Edward in the sack without having to get married. Somewhere in this the werewolves and vampires band together to kill a looming threat. But at the end of the day, Bella rejects Jacob's love and agrees to marry Edward.
I totally agree that she's one of the weakest heroines ever written. With that said, I'll leave you with a fantastic quote.
"Edward loved me. The bond forged between us was not one that could be broken by absence, distance, or time. And no matter how much more special or beautiful or brilliant or perfect than me he might be, he was as irrieversibly altered as I was. As I would always belong to him, so would he always be mine
I've never read the books but I HEARD they were written by an atheist and they are all about female mutilation and if you read them you will lose your testimony! I would start an email propaganda protest immediately. Who doesn't love misinformed spam? Oh wait, wrong book....
I’m feeling sassy. I taught verbal irony in class today, more commonly known as sarcasm.
Nollie. Honestly I have no idea why I love them, but they SUCKED ME IN!!! Honestly, I think you are just way more sophisticated than me, and probably have higher standards for your reading material. Basically for me I think it's Edward, Bella gets on my nerves but Edward's such a gentlemen. I think Bella redeems herself a bit at the very end of Eclipse. I must say that, although I love them, it is refreshing to hear a more critical review. Gives me something to think about.
I should have put a spoiler alert on my comment. Sorry folks.
I totally agree with you. I HAD to keep reading but Bella makes me gag and I am sick of hearing about Edward's perfect body and features. I still haven't read the third. Oh well.
Good for you Nollie!! I haven't read them, but i love to be contrary on these sorts of things. I'm evangelizing Atonement, by Ian McEwan these days. If you want gorgeous writing... Plus, it's coming out as a movie with Kiera Knightly next month.
I was thinking I might give in and read these books just to see what all the fuss is about but I think I'll pass now. I didn't really want to read them anyway. Thanks for the dissenting vote.
Thank You Nollie!!!!! I have been thinking this for weeks. I did not even make it through the first book! I always picked up Children the Challenge each time I had a few minutes and reached for a book. That is bad! I prefered to read a parenting book over Twilight sitting on my book shelf! Anytime I mentioned, in public, I did not love the book, everyone gasped! Nice to know someone else out there thinks the same.
read all three, there ok, not fantastic like everyone is making them out to be...I guess I don't have an opinion either way....I don't know if that is good or bad...but I loved your opinion....you had very valid points.
